Migrating Landscapes
Museum of Vancouver, British Columbia
An Operative Agency project with Steve DiPasquale
2011
This competition for emerging architectural designers took the notion of (un)settlement as its starting point, prompting entrants to address their personal stories of migration through the exploration of a ‘dwelling’ and the production of a narrative short-film. Our entry sought to formally capture the tenuous situation of the immigrant through a sculpted ‘home’. Through an ambiguity of scale and position the abstract dwelling appears to be both held together and on the verge of falling apart through a series of forces. Its location on a sloped landscape provides opportunities for the form to ascend as well as fall back from the earth. Our narrative, a confluence of histories, attempts to reconcile the fragmented nature of personal identity construction and its shared experience.
